What a lovely weekend it was. Edgar and I spent all of Saturday exploring the Oregon coast. We go to the beach somewhat often but we always go to the same place, Cannon Beach, which is wonderful in its own right. But we thought we were due to have a bigger look around.
After driving by the ever famous and super stinky Tillamook Cheese Factory, we made our first quick stop at Barview, a tiny little coast town with a small beach and large rock barriers that edge the bay. The weather was sunny and warm and there were countless boats on the water and a few classic looking fisherman walking on the streets. It was lovely.
Then we were on to Rockaway Beach, our one really planned destination. Our friends Steve and Nicole told us they love this beach and take their dogs there often. They were right. It was very nice. Edgar and I and our two canine children took a nice long walk there and enjoyed the powdery uncrowded miles of white beach. Our dog Hazel is twelve now and spent all of last year having her knees reconstructed and recovering with physical therapy. Now she can do just about anything but we were worried that it would be to much to let her go. Even as a young dog, she would go so nuts and run so hard on the beach that she would be so sore the next day that she would wimper when getting on and off our sofa. So what I am getting at is that she was expecting to be let go and barked first for joy but then as a command to be set free. “Now, no now, okay now”... and on and on.
We were pleased to see her so happy but her constant barking stole a bit of the peace out of the day.
After that we drove further up the coast to Manzanita. A beautiful dune covered beach with monumental cliffs and lots of evergreen trees lining it. We had a quick windy walk there. Our dogs ears being held up by the blast of the wind. Very cute and kept us laughing.
And to finish off our little adventure we headed to the faithfully fabulous Cannon Beach and ate fresh crab, shrimp and halibut at an outside table of our favorite little seafood place. Then we drove home, always a scenic drive over the cascade range, and lit a fire and watched a movie. oh yes, we needed that.
Sunday was spent in the studio working on a large portrait commission and this little beauty of a painting that you can find at www.ameliamakesart.etsy.com
